HMAA Chairman Honoured with Peak Tourism Gong

first_imgGarry CrockettHMAA National President and Blue Mountains tourism icon Garry Crockett has been honoured with the peak Outstanding Contribution honour at this year’s NSW Tourism Awards.Accepting the trophy in front of 700 tourism industry leaders at Rosehill Racecourse on Friday night, Mr Crockett said he was humbled yet delighted to be honoured by his peers at such an exciting time in the tourism and travel industry.Mr Crockett, 61, was a 29-year-old in 1979 when he took the plunge into tourism by buying the Mountain Heritage Hotel, in Katoomba. He went on to build the small guesthouse into The Crockett Group, a major Sydney-based company specialising in property investment, hotel and hospitality management and tourism consulting. He recognised early in his tourism career that operators needed to work together for the greater glory and went on to become a founding director of both the Blue Mountains Accommodation Association and the Blue Mountains Tourism Authority.Hearing a group of Irish immigrant visitors to his guesthouse nostalgically likening the Blue Mountains in winter to white Christmases in the old country prompted the young entrepreneur to start the annual Blue Mountains Winter Yulefest, an institution now in its 30th year.  His success in the Mountains and advocacy for industry solidarity saw him invited onto the Board of the Motor Inn & Motel Association of Australia (MIMA) in 1992, a move that led him to his present role of Chair of MIMA successor, HMAA.The Crockett Group now runs three tourism properties in the Blue Mountains – Mountain Heritage Hotel & Spa, The Falls Mountain Retreat, and Yester Grange – and is developing a major spa and conference resort complex at Warburton in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.  Mr Crockett is a director of more than 10 private and not-for-profit organisations.
