first_img Share GAME NOTES: McDonald Fleming Moorhead Tip-Off Classic    PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Florida men’s basketball team will open the 2012-13 season this weekend by hosting the McDonald Fleming Moorhead Tip-Off Classic.  The Argonauts will start the year against Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m., and they will then face Georgia College on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m.Live coverage 2012-13 Game Notes:11/9 vs. Palm Beach Atlantic, Georgia College Historic seasonThe Argonauts are coming off one of the best seasons in school history, winning 19 games to finish one win shy of the school record set in 1997-98.  The Argonauts also finished the year tied for third place in the GSC standings, the highest finish for the team since 1999-00.New starting lineupHead coach Bob Stinnett will have a big job ahead of him, having to replace the entire starting lineup from last year’s team.  Last year’s starting five of Martell Buie, Marquis Mathis, Jamar Moore, Anthony Sims and Mike Whisman were each big contributors to the team’s success.Missed it by that muchLast year’s team nearly earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.  The Argonauts were ranked No. 6 in the regional rankings heading into the GSC Tournament, but a loss to eventual conference champion Alabama-Huntsville on a buzzer-beater in the semifinals ended UWF’s season.Seasoned newcomerTracy Williams joins the team this year after an extended break.  Williams last played for Clayton State in 2007-08, leading the Lakers to a Peach Belt Conference championship.  Williams also starred for Indian River State College for two years, and he played prep basketball at Cocoa High School.Student and teacherDuring Tracy Williams’ four-year break between his junior and senior seasons, he went back to help coach at Cocoa High School.  During the 2008-09 season, Cocoa High was led by Ellis Young III.  Young is now starting his first year at UWF after two years at Brevard Community College, and he will now get to play alongside his former coach.Overseas ArgonautsLast year’s team had two players sign professional contracts to play in Europe.  Jamar Moore signed with the webmoebel Baskets, a team in Paderborn, Germany that plays in the Basketball Bundesliga, the second-highest level of professional basketball in Germany.  Marquis Mathis signed with Farul Constanta in Constanta, Romania, a member of the 16-team Division A league, the highest level of basketball in the country.Former Argonaut All-American Reggie Warren is also continuing his professional career in Japan, recently signing with Rizing Fukuoka of the BJ-League.  Warren is averaging 15.9 points and 12-plus rebounds per game with six double-doubles in eight games.This week’s opponentsPALM BEACH ATLANTICPalm Beach Atlantic is an independent Division II school from West Palm Beach, Fla.  The Sailfish are coming off a season in which they went 4-22.  PBA returns its leading scorer from last year, a 5-10 guard Dante Valentine.  Valentine averaged 13.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 2011-12.GEORGIA COLLEGEThe Georgia College Bobcats are coming off a season in which they finished 17-10 overall and 10-7 in Peach Belt Conference play.  The team’s leading returner is Scott Ferguson, a 6-6 forward who averaged 6.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest. Print Friendly Versioncenter_img Photo by John Blackie last_img read more

Rep Sheppard praises committees passage of auto rate reduction legislation

Jason Sheppard today voiced his approval of the House Insurance Committee passage of legislation that reforms Michigan’s broken auto no-fault insurance system.House Bill 5013 allows drivers to choose unlimited coverage as well as other different levels of personal injury protection (PIP), cracks down on fraud and abuse, and reins in medical costs by establishing a fee schedule.“I am pleased the House Insurance Committee approved House Bill 5013, which makes important changes to our state’s auto no-fault insurance system,” said Sheppard, of Temperance. “This is a critical first step in our goal to provide affordable car insurance rates for all Michigan residents.”The plan continues benefits for Michiganders already receiving lifetime health care after a catastrophic accident and allows drivers the option to continue buying unlimited PIP coverage.“I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue to move this bill along,” Sheppard said.House Bill 5013 now moves to the full House for consideration. 26Oct Rep.
